BOOKS
HEAT 2: A Novel by Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner
āDonāt let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat, if you feel the heat around the corner.ā
āIām angry. Iām very angry, Ralph. You know, you can ball my wife if she wants you to. You can lounge around here on her sofa, in her ex-husbandās dead-tech, post-modernistic bullshit house if you want to. But you do not get to watch my fucking television set!ā
āFor me, the action is the juice.ā
These are a few of my favorite lines of dialogue from the iconic movie, Heat, by Michael Mann. Two years ago, Mann (along with author Meg Gardiner) wrote a sequel (and prequel) in novel form and it was phenomenal.
This is every single thing you could possibly want from revisiting these characters.
We get deep and intriguing backstory on Pacinoās Vincent Hanna, DeNiroās McCauley and Kilmerās Chris Sheherlis. We also get clever, explosive dialogue true to the characters and itās impossible not to read the lines without DeNiro and Pacinoās voices in your head, which is a good thingā¦
We learn how their respective crews came together, how they crossed paths in Chicago in ā88 and what happened after the finale to the movie in 1995. There are new heists, new villains, new over-the-top scenes and charactersā¦
This is one of the most fun, action-packed, enjoyable reads Iāve had in a while.
And the reason Iām writing about this book now is because I just came across an interview with the legendary director himself, Michael Mann, and he said that heās almost completed the screenplay for the film and he wants to make it his next movie.
Presumably, Pacino will be involved. Curious who he gets to play a young (and older) Val Kilmer, along with the younger versions of DeNiroās entire crew. Lot of excitement for this one so be prepared for it and read it now. Also, the paperback is only $11 now. Easy purchase.
BICEPS
Although itās 80 degrees in Florida today we have a fair amount of B&B readers battling it out in winter conditions, lacking motivation to get that sweet, sweet daily sweat in.
Iāve had a few people reach out to me the last few weeks asking for a simple, fat burning, go-to workout they could knock out several times a week. Yes, Iām combining several requests into one.
And since Iām a simple man who likes simple answers, Iām going to give you the simplest, most effective 30 - 40 minute fat burning workout that youāre likely to do.
What I mean by that is, there are plenty of complicated circuits and sets with equipment that will workā¦ And thereās always the āburpees ātil you pukeā crowd.
But for a workout to be useful, you have to want to do it first and it has to be achievable. It also has to be something you can improve at and enjoy over time if youāre going to keep doing it.
All that being said, get yourself a decent jump rope (like this one) and try this:
12 Rounds Jump Rope: 1 minute jump / 1 minute rest (or 30 seconds if youāre in good shape)
12 Rounds Street Sprints: 100 yard sprints / 30 second rest (you can pace off or guestimate 100 yards on your street or at a park - yes, you can run outside in the winter, itās actually refreshing)
And thatās it. High intensity. Intervals. Gets your whole body moving. Jacks up your heart rate. Easy. You can add/subtract rounds to your fitness level. This can be a 24 minute workout or a 48 minute workout or anything in between.
I try to do this at least every other week and I love it.
QUICK FLEXES
Last summer many of you read David Morrellās legendary book, First Blood, which ultimately became the movie, Rambo. Though I loved the movie, I thought the book was sensational and it lead me to read more of Morrellās work, which weāve recommended in this newsletter, and also to seek out interviews with him.
This book came up in conversation this week and the person I was talking to recommended this podcast with Morrell and bestselling author and Navy SEAL, Jack Carr. Itās fantastic, but itās super long, so Iāve watched it in parts over the course of a weekās worth of eating lunch, but youāll love it:
