BOOKS

The War of Art by Steven Pressfield
Now that I have completed the FINAL EDITS on my thriller Bear Brawl (coming 11/26 from Blackstone Publishing, pre-orders available soon) I am turning my attention to the novel I’m writing next. No, it’s not a sequel to Brawl, it’s an entirely different and awesome idea that I’ve wanted to tackle for a while. Action-packed and kick ass.
And if you’re thinking, “dude, you’re starting a novel for your second next book even though the first next book you just wrapped up isn’t coming out for fourteen months???”
Yes, yes I am. As a writer friend told me a long time ago, being an author is like living in the future; everything you write doesn’t get put out into the world for years, so you have to plan way ahead.
And my friend was 100% correct. You can’t wait until Brawl comes out in November of 2026 to start your next book or even finish it or that next book won’t come out until 2028! That’s insane. So the plan as I move into fiction is to have a new book out every year starting in 2026 and to do that, I’ve gotta start writing the book for 2027 right now.
You follow me? I know you didn’t expect there to be any math in this issue, but I thought you’d enjoy a little behind-the-books calculations.
Now back to this week’s book rec:
Before I start a new book I pick up one of my favorite books on creativity to keep me dialed in, The War of Art by Steven Pressfield.
To be fair, it’s not technically a “book”. It’s more like a series of essays and thoughts and short observations from Pressfield (a NY times bestselling author and screenwriter) on how to destroy fear, doubt, procrastination and anything else standing in the way of you accomplishing your goals. The work focuses on writing, but it can pertain to anyone who has a dream they’re aiming for.
The “war” Pressfield is referring to is what he calls our inner battle against the Resistance. In this case, the Resistance is every single force in the universe trying to distract, dissuade and demotivate you from reaching your full potential creatively.
“Resistance is like the Alien or the Terminator or the shark in Jaws. It cannot be reasoned with. It understands nothing but power,” Pressfield writes.
He’s got sections titled, “Resistance is Insidious” and “Resistance and Trouble” and “Resistance and Rationalization”.
The writing is one long middle finger to Resistance and you will be nodding your head the entire time. Yes, I do that… Yes, that has distracted me… Yes, I’ve been unfocused like that… If you’ve got a big goal you want to tackle, I HIGHLY recommend you pick this up ASAP. It’s about 150 pages. You’ll read it in a few sittings and come away energized. I promise. Buy it here.
BOOKS 2
I posted a video this week promoting my Manologue column in Midlife Male which you can watch here:
And after I posted it, my buddy and OG B&B reader Travis was the first of many comments asking to see a full shot of the bookshelf behind me, so here goes. I recently re-did it so that I could clear a few shelves for new books (I’ve got several stacks around the house), but this is the most updated photo of the Official Books & Biceps HQ Library. The top shelf is all extra copies of my books and the rest is done mostly by size and loosely by topic. Zoom in and enjoy:

BICEPS
I’m not an Eagles or Chiefs fan and I don’t listen to the Kelce Bros podcast. I don’t particularly care about either Kelce, but I came across this training video with Jason and Dr. Mike, one of the more interesting, educated fitness/trainers on YouTube, and I enjoyed it.
The video is a training session with Mike and Jason Kelce with a unique goal. Kelce played center for the Eagles for 13 years. He’s 6’3” and his playing weight hovered around 300 pounds.
Now that he’s retired, he wants to drop his fat, while keeping his muscle and gaining mass. He says he likes feeling big and strong, so his goal is to get more of a bodybuilder physique. Dr. Mike puts together a chest and triceps workout for Jason that is not a balls out, heavy lifting program. It’s a lot of light weight moves. A lot of reps. A lot of controlled bodyweight movements. Very interesting way to approach a workout and it’s fun watching an ex-NFL lineman get humbled in the weight room with as little weight as possible. I’ve already borrowed from this and am dialing back my bench and chest work and adding in a series of push-ups and slow stretches. Check it out:
