💪Harold Ramis Honored, Anthony Jeselnik's Masterpiece, Jeff Pearlman Revisits John Rocker, Wyatt Earp and more...

ISSUE #67 - May 10th, 2019

ONE

BOOKS - Did you love Harold Ramis? Of course you did. We all did. On the director side his comedy legacy is untouchable: Caddyshack, Vacation, Groundhog Day, a dozen others and a few episodes of The Office to top it off.   As an actor, his small roles and starring roles were equally awesome. He passed away in 2014 but I just found out his daughter wrote a heartfelt book titled, of course: Ghostbuster's Daughter. Just ordered and can't wait to read it. Check it out here.

TWO

COMEDY - I realize that Anthony Jeselnik's comedy isn't for everyone. I also realize that when it comes to pushing boundaries, touching on "untouchable" topics and essentially going where most comedians/people won't...he's brilliant.  I've been a fan of Jeselnik since I saw his first special a while back and his newest one-hour show for Netflix just came out. His timing and misdirection are impeccable. It's hard to explain, but if no-look passes were jokes, he'd be Magic or Stockton or Steve Nash, hitting you with the punchline when and where you least expect it. You'll know within 5 minutes if this is your type of humor, but if it is, the next 55 minutes will be awesome. Here's his website for more info.

THREE

PODCAST - The best podcast I listened to this week was Jeff Pearlman's 100th episode, which featured a deep dive on his famous Sports Illustratad cover story of one-time Braves star John Rocker.  For those who don't remember or are too young, Rocker, for a very brief period of time, was a superstar in Major League Baseball. He was a lights out closer for one of the best teams and he had a swagger and cockiness and overpowering demeanor that made him stand out. Then, Pearlman's cover story came out and exposed him for being on absolutely horrible person...using nothing but Rocker's own quotes and actions. Listening to this podcast is almost like listening to a documentary, with original tape spliced in, along with perfect storytelling from Jeff. It's a fascinating and fantastic hour to listen to.

FOUR

FOOD - I have really been working on eating high protein, healthy meals when it comes to dinners during the week when time is short because of all the kids' practices (swimming & soccer) and homework (sucks even more the 2nd time around) and on and on. So, I invented this meal I'm calling: JonBoy's Chicken, Peppers & Cheese  My goal was simple: five ingredients in the meal and under fifteen minutes to make (a real 15, not a Blue Apron "15 minutes actually means seven hours"). Also, little to no clean-up. Here's what I came up with: Cut chicken breast into cubes and put it in a skillet with sliced green, red and yellow peppers. Cook it. Add taco seasoning. Add a handful of Tillamook cheese. Stir until melted. Done. Has a ton of protein, a lot of veggies, good flavor and barely any ingredients. Also, you only have one thing to clean. Enjoy.

FIVE

A TREMENDOUS QUOTE ABOUT NOT RUSHING:  “Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything. In a gun fight... You need to take your time in a hurry." - Wyatt Earp   I came across this quote while reading an old Texas magazine. While Earp was talking about gunfighting, it really feels like it could apply to a lot of things. "Take your time in a hurry." Definitely made me think. It's a lot like John Wooden's "be quick, but don't hurry" quote. Maybe the Wizard of Westwood stole it from Wyatt?
