💪LL Cool J, an 830-Mile Air Force March, NBA Star Odds, old Herschel Walker footage and...

ISSUE #58 (Captain: Jack Lambert) - March 8th, 2019

ONE

PERFORMANCE - When it comes to new protein bars at store displays and end caps, I like to think of myself as a modern day Julius Caesar with a motto of Vini, Vidi, Eaty (I came, I saw, I ate - for those who don't speak Latin).  The bars I enjoyed this week were SKOUT Backcountry Organic Protein Bars and the flavor I tried, Dark Chocolate Cherry, was delicious. Taste-wise, I have no complaints. The bars were a little small and only have 10g of protein, but I realize that's fine for most people. I'd probably need three to hold me over between meals, so they need a monster FF5 version...but give'em a shot, they were really good.

TWO

INSPIRATION - Every year since 2009, Air Force Special Tactics performs an 830 mile march to honor their fallen soldiers. The march goes from Lackland Air Force Base in Texas and finishes at Hurlburt Field, Florida.  The march wrapped up this week and they had a website that allowed you to track these heroes and follow them along their journey, which I did the last few days. Some of the footage is amazing, like this, posted by an Army veteran. Other footage from the beginning of the march will make the hair on your neck stand-up. Incredible sacrifice and discipline by these soldiers. Thought it was important to share if you've never heard of it.

THREE

KNOWLEDGE - Everyone who follows hoops knows that the likelihood of an exceptional high school basketball player actually becoming a star in the NBA is extremely small... But did you know how small?  Answer? Really, really small. And then go even smaller. This feature by Russell Goldenberg and Amber Thomas is interesting, entertaining and gives a clear picture of the odds even a Top 100 recruit faces in terms of having a sustainable career in the pros. There are several charts that break down how far each player goes, from top recruit to top college player to making the Association to becoming a starter to stardom and as you'd expect, the list gets smaller and smaller the higher you go. A must read for basketball fans.

FOUR

NOSTALGIA - The NFL Combine finished earlier this week and despite what you heard about how eye-popping some players were running the 40, none of them were as fast as Herschel Walker running the 60.  Yes, I said the 60-yard dash. For those who don't know, in addition to being dominant on the football field, Herschel Walker was a world class sprinter in college and this old footage of him dusting the field in this 60-yard race (while outweighing everyone else by 40 pounds), is astonishing. Don't let the Spanish subtitles distract you from his lightning speed.

FIVE

A TREMENDOUS QUOTE:  "When adversity strikes, that's when you have to be most calm. Take a step back, stay strong, stay grounded and press on."   - LL Cool J (likely before his Mama Said Knock You Out)
